Club Atlético River Plate have made the contract renewal of their starting goalkeeper, Santiago Beltrán, a top priority. The board is negotiating to extend his deal, currently set to expire at the end of 2027, until the end of 2029 and to increase his release clause from $25 million to €100 million.

The club's objective is clear. Internal sources have stated that finalising the deal as soon as possible is a priority "to ensure he continues to guard the biggest goal in the world for a long time to come". Beltrán, 21, became the undisputed number one this year after his top-flight debut, making 38 appearances in 2026 with 15 clean sheets and 32 goals conceded. His minutes per goal conceded average stands at 107 minutes, a figure that shows his consistency between the posts.

His rapid rise and decisive performances, including penalty saves in shootouts, have generated interest from Europe and also positioned him as an alternative for the Argentina national team. He was included in an extended 55-player list for the recent World Cup and remained under the watch of the national technical staff during the friendly period, especially when Emiliano Martínez was dealing with a latent fracture situation.

Beltrán's renewal is part of a broader club strategy, which also includes talks to renew Ezequiel Centurión, whose contract expires on the same date and who shares an agent with the goalkeeper. The internal ideal is for Beltrán to remain at the club for many more years.

This move comes at a time of sporting stability for River, who sit seventh in the Liga Profesional with 13 points from nine games. The team enters these negotiations on a positive run of three consecutive wins, the latest a 2-1 victory over Atlético Tucumán on September 12. In their recent form, the team has taken 10 points from the last 12 available, showing a clear defensive improvement that aligns with the solidity displayed by Beltrán. The next fixture is against Huracán at the Monumental, a match you can watch in our fixtures.

Off the pitch, Beltrán has also shown his human side. After the win over Independiente Rivadavia, the goalkeeper fulfilled a child's dream on his birthday. This gesture adds to the club's prominent role in hosting Lionel Messi's farewell match from the national team. To follow the squad's progress, visit the official squad page.
