River Plate is currently facing a difficult start to the season, having lost its first three matches. The poor performances against Barracas Central and Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata in the Torneo Clausura, as well as Aldosivi in the Copa Argentina 16th round, have reignited doubts about the club’s decision to sideline more than a dozen players.
Coach Eduardo Coudet acknowledged that the team is still adjusting: 'The planning process is taking longer than we initially thought. It's a matter of time and effort. New players are arriving, and we will bring in three or four more across different positions where we have many young talents who struggle to take on significant responsibilities.'
Despite the addition of six new players-Ángel Correa, Nicolás Otamendi, Lucas Beltrán, Rafael Santos Borré (Colombian), Mauro Arambarri (Uruguayan), and Giovanni González (Uruguayan)-and potential future signings, discussions have resurfaced about whether any of the marginalized players should return to the squad. Some, like Maximiliano Meza who has rejoined Independiente, Paulo Díaz who joined Atlanta United in the MLS, and Alex Woiski who rescinded his contract, are no longer part of the conversation.
Among those still under consideration for a possible reintegration into Coudet's squad are Germán Pezzella, Giuliano Galoppo, Matías Viña (Uruguayan), Santiago Lencina, Fabricio Bustos, Maximiliano Salas, Ian Subiabre, Matías Galarza Fonda (Paraguayan), and Kendry Páez and Kevin Castaño (both Colombian). The club is still weighing the options to see if any of these players could contribute positively to the team’s performance.
