River Plate is currently 15th in the Liga Profesional Argentina, with 0 points, 0 wins, 0 draws, and 4 losses in 4 games. In the league, they are 12 points behind the leaders Argentinos JRS. In this context, Martín Demichelis, coach of RB Leipzig, spoke about the talents emerged in River Plate, Claudio Echeverri and Franco Mastantuono. Demichelis directed Echeverri and Mastantuono when they were just starting to make their way in the first division of River. He followed their growth and now, installed again in Germany to face a new challenge as coach of RB Leipzig, referred to the current European situation of two of the greatest talents emerged in Núñez in recent years. Not only did he support them: in the face of the possibilities that existed of a return to Argentine football, he was categorical. “Today I wish them not to return, because I have no doubt that they are prepared to perform”, he said. Demichelis made his debut with Echeverri on June 22, 2023, against Instituto, while Mastantuono made his debut on January 22, 2024, against Argentinos Juniors. The coach reconstructed those first steps and marked the differences he found between both processes, in an era in which the two young players appeared as some of the most important projects in River. “They were two different cases, because when I arrived at River, the name of ‘Golden Boy’, let's say, was Claudio. But he was training with the National Team from Monday to Thursday and came on Fridays, played in Reserve, so I couldn't have him. I talked to him, he understood, he improved, demonstrating he was capable of keeping up the pace”, revealed Demichelis in an interview. The situation of Mastantuono, as he explained, was different. The current coach of Leipzig knew the player a few months before promoting him and quickly found answers that accelerated the times planned for his incorporation into the professional team. “With Franco something different happened, I knew Franco around November. The idea was to gradually load the loads with them, but Franco was always one of the kids who rendered the most physically in the day-to-day also”, he recalled. Since then, the careers of both have taken a European route. Echeverri left River at the end of 2024 and passed to Manchester City, while Mastantuono was transferred to Real Madrid in mid-2025, in a historic amount. Today the Chacoan returned to the English club after a loan in Girona and the player born in Azul has just been presented in Fiorentina, also on loan, after his first season in Madrid. “We must not forget all the great ex-players who have passed through Europe who have needed a lot of time. Higuaín needed a year to settle in at Real Madrid, Javi Saviola at Barcelona, the same Pablo Aimar, and I can name many more”, he said. His conclusion pointed in the same direction: “They are in a period of adaptation, they are not yet old, but they will get there”, he said.
